The short answer
AI SEO for an Austin business means making sure ChatGPT and Google's AI features can find your website, read it, and trust what your business listings say about you. There is no secret switch. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and that "Placement is not guaranteed," and Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in its AI Overviews or AI Mode.
What you can control is narrower and more practical than the pitch usually sounds: whether the crawlers are allowed in, whether your pages answer the search ChatGPT actually runs, and whether your business listings carry the reviews and details the answer is built from.
How does ChatGPT find local businesses?
ChatGPT turns a question into ordinary searches and builds its answer from what comes back. OpenAI's help article on ChatGPT search says that when it partners with other search providers, ChatGPT typically rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries. OpenAI's own example turns "What are some good restaurants near me?" asked from the San Francisco area into the search "top restaurants San Francisco."
Location comes from you. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use an approximate location based on your IP address, and may share that location with trusted third-party providers that supply local information such as nearby business listings. Answers that use web search may include citations, and on phones relevant results may include a map.
Listings carry a lot of the answer. Yelp states on its own blog that its integration with ChatGPT surfaces Yelp's reviews, ratings, photos and business details inside the chat. When we run buyer questions through ChatGPT for our clients each month, the local answers list business records with a rating and a review count beside each name.
Can ChatGPT read your website?
ChatGPT can only show your site in search answers if your site lets OpenAI's search crawler in. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers."
| User agent | What it is for | If you block it |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfacing websites in ChatGPT search | Your site is not shown in ChatGPT search answers |
| GPTBot | Content that may be used to train models | Your content should not be used in training; search is unaffected |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits a person's request triggers | Not used to decide what appears in search |
Two settings break this without anyone noticing. The first is a robots.txt file that blocks every bot, often left over from a site build. The second is a firewall or content delivery network that blocks unfamiliar traffic, which is why OpenAI's help center asks site owners to confirm the host allows OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses. OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt change for its systems to adjust.
What about Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google's AI answers draw on the same index as regular search, so ordinary SEO is the work. Google Search Central says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet to be used as a supporting link.
The same page lists what to keep in order: the same foundational SEO practices as for search overall, structured data that matches the visible text on the page, and Business Profile information that is up to date. Google also says its AI features may use a "query fan-out" technique, running several related searches across subtopics, which rewards a site that answers the follow-up questions as well as the first one. Traffic from these features is counted inside the Web search type in Search Console.
What can an Austin business actually control?
An Austin service business controls five things that feed these answers, and none of them is exotic:
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and make sure the host or firewall is not blocking it.
- Write pages that answer the search ChatGPT actually runs, which is usually your service plus your city, not the buyer's exact words.
- Keep the Google Business Profile complete and current, because Google names it on its AI features page.
- Earn reviews where the listings are read. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, and Yelp says its reviews and ratings appear inside ChatGPT.
- Keep structured data matched to what the page visibly says.
Most of that list is local SEO done properly. If you want to see where you stand before changing anything, our free AI Readiness Audit asks ChatGPT the questions your customers ask and shows you whether your business comes back.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?
Mostly not. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and that the same foundational SEO practices apply. ChatGPT adds one check of its own: OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my business from ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI treats its crawlers separately. GPTBot covers content that may be used in training, while OAI-SearchBot decides whether a site can appear in ChatGPT search answers, so a site can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed. Google likewise says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Visibility comes from being crawlable, relevant and well reviewed.
Where does ChatGPT get local business information?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and content from partners, and may share an approximate location with trusted third-party providers for nearby business listings. Yelp states that its integration surfaces Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details inside ChatGPT.
